so if I am wearing a hello kitty costume, and I try to do the forward roll, isn't my giant head going to get in the way? And it will be hard to breath with no mouth.

Wow. That's the first time I've ever heard you speak.

A few questions for you...

First, isn't part of the point of the burpee to do the squat thrust motion? The "faster" flavors of them that you showed seem to take most of that motion out, so it'd seem to lose some of the benefit.

Second, how did it get the name "Hello Kitty burpee"?

I blitzed past a lot of variants of burpee. The standard burpee that I demonstrated is in fact the "standard", plain-vanilla burpee. I've seen a lot of colors and flavors, but this is the most universal. The movement standards are the same as those taught and shared across the original crossfits and at the CrossFit Games from 2008 and the Regionals Qualifiers this year.

I, sadly, blitzed past the teaching point I started making but didn't finish, about how people who cannot do the pushup can still do the burpee, by walking the hands back to the feet or otherwise, HOWEVER or SOMEHOW, getting from ground to standing and then jumping.

Second point, the name... if I leave this to assorted crossfit jackasses, they might call this the Muthahphuggin Rambo Super-Jack-You-Up Burpee. And indeed we can get into pissing contests of the holiest mother-of-god badass burpees. I can do a burpee backflip. We can do barbell burpees. There are combination Burpee-to-MuscleUp-to-handstand-press-on the rings. All these things are possible and legitimate. The Hello Kitty Burpee, however, is seriously tough (especially when someone throws down a 21-15-9 with these mixed in), without the grotesque overstatement too many people are prone to. It's actually a legit, functional movement, which is why I like it.

And comic understatement is classy.

There's no cute story of how it got the name, I just like fun, quirky, sometimes cutesy names. Er, for instance there are some funny names attached to the workouts I linked to in the post above, some sample 'traveling' or equipment-light workouts I gave to my friend [info]songofapollo.
