Tash and I are visiting California for about 10 days...

  • July 7th, Tash takes step 2 in her medical licensing exam. Step 2 involves professional actors, playing 'patients' with conditions, and the examinee must demonstrate her clinical skills. This can only be done at 5 regional centers throughout the U.S.

  • We'll visit with [info]radiantsun and [info]mhat

  • July 8th, 9th - visiting [info]mudita and Kathy in Carson City, NV near Lake Tahoe

  • July 10th, 11th, 12th - The CrossFit Games

  • July 13th, Monterey, Carmel and PCH southbound... so Tash can have a bowl of clam chowder. I'm only half joking. She's been wanting me to take her back for the clam chowder for, oh, about 10 months.

  • July 14th - Disneyland!!!

We've considered climbing Mt. Whitney, seeing the Redwoods, or spending more days visiting crossfit affiliates. The ferry to Catalina Island is interesting, as is hiking with geeks on a Sunday (but Sunday will be at the Games). We'd like to visit the San Diego Zoo, but doubt we can fit it in.

Right now I'm trying to wrap my head around Disneyland; I needed a small attitude adjustment. Tash will be ecstatic the whole day. I know this is perfect for her and how much she'll love it, so I've sold myself on it. I'm looking for any little tips people can give me on how we can get the most of it. I've barely read a single page on it so far... I learned about FREEPASS! which is pretty cool, minimizes waiting in lines. Is there a way to get discounted entrance tickets?

I've heard you can get discounted tickets through costo or AAA

Cool, thanks - we just got a costco membership recently, just 'cause it seemed to coordinate well with our minivan. (ha. we don't have a minivan anymore, it was actually because [info]antoinebugleboy recommended it and we were spending too much on groceries.)

It's nearly impossible to find discounted Disneyland tickets for one-day one-park. Most of the discounts out there are if you want to go for multiple days, or to both Disneyland and California Adventure. (And of course those discounted tickets cost more than a full-priced single-day admission.)

You might want to consider a one-day park-hopper ticket, which lets you go to both Disneyland and California Adventure. Lines shouldn't be too long on a Tuesday, so you should be able to do all you want at both parks.

California Adventure definitely isn't worth a full-priced admission on its own. But it might be worth the price bump between a Disneyland admission and a one-day park-hopper, especially if you can find a discount.

Ah, thank you. I appreciate your opinion on DCA, I had just seen references to it (for the park hopper passes) and was curious whether it was worth going to. I think we'll probably stick to the one park, one pass, and indeed there are no discounts to be had. I may get Tash to agree to forego food for several days though, so it's all good.

Jawohl, can we go cause some trouble on the 7th to distract me from the anxiety over Tash's exams? (translation, are you free during the day?)

lol I am free during the day except some dogs I gotta walk in westwood, so you can come walk them with me

Are you bringing Mischka? (they are little pomeranians who are not well trained, I've been working on training them)

Yes, Mischka will definitely be with me. She's good enough that we can put her somewhere else for several hours if need be, if the weather's less than 95F outside we can leave her in a car for hours, even.

She's extremely well socialized with other dogs, and it seems to be impossible to provoke her to aggression. She's been bit/attacked by other dogs, and she remains absolutely unflappable. She basically dodges the attack, looks at them quizzically (like, "how curious that is!"), then again tries to make friends. So far, she has always succeeded in making friends, after the other dogs get tired of trying to attack her. However --- after making friends with these dogs, if they're bigger than her, she usually wants to show her dominance. She hasn't done this with any smaller dogs though, she just sniffs at them. When she was younger she was a little afraid of smaller dogs, but the other day she got wrapped up in the leashes of 3 tiny little dogs, I think they were springer spaniels, and they got over their anxiety towards her pretty quickly.

I don't think I know anything about dog training, I think I'm just really lucky and have a great relationship with mischka. She's absolutely zealous about obeying me, and it seems her greatest fear in teh world is making me unhappy. So I can put my plate of meat down in front of her and leave her with it, and if she knows it's mine, she won't touch it even if she's famished. Also, she's starting to get a little more mature now, so she's less distracted, which makes a difference. She used to get distracted and then she wouldn't hear me and I couldn't control her, but now I can get her attention and then she obeys.

Awesome. These litle dogs are not well socialized, they bark at anything they see across the street. Right now if they do that I give thema little tug, and that works if I see something before they do, if not I stand in front of them, between them and whatever they are barking at and that stops them.

I think it would be fun to have Mischka with us!! How is she with cats?

We've only had her with a few cats. She tries to make friends, and she's persistent in trying to make friends. My mom's cat won't tolerate this, so Mischka sits there in front of her (persistently trying to make friends) and the cat keeps clawing at her, and they're at an impasse.

With little baby kittens, she tries to make friends and because they're babies they can't escape. I don't know how much this scares the kitties but they seem ok with it.

She doesn't hurt them, is the only guarantee I can make. I think she must have been clawed by at least one cat, though I couldn't see any sign of it and haven't seen it, but her behavior doesn't change no matter how hard the cat is trying to attack her. She just ducks, weaves, smiles and tries to sniff again.

If you haven't seen it in person, go check out ASIMO. It's hard to describe the odd feeling you get watching it move around.

Where is it? Is it in a Honda demo studio, or a museum, or...?

Oh, in Disneyland! I had no idea.

I just now thought how... quaint it would be if they still had that Michael Jackson character, something like Captain Io.
